Nowhere Is a Direction Too
On the miles that count even when they don't lead anywhere yet.
The chrome
held the whole sky
without complaint.
She leaned against it
the way you lean
against something
that has already decided
to stay still
while you figure out
if you have.
People called it
running away.
It was not running.
Running has a direction.
This was something else —
the version of leaving
that does not know yet
what it is leaving toward.
The road
did not care
that she had no destination.
It just kept being
the only thing
in any direction
that made sense
to follow.
Somewhere
a real reason
would arrive.
For now,
the heat shimmer
on the horizon
was reason enough.
She had been taught
that you needed a plan
before you moved.
The road
taught her otherwise.
Sometimes
the moving
is the plan.
Nobody had filled these pumps
in years.
She stopped anyway.
Not for gas.
For the particular comfort
of something
that had also
stopped pretending
to be useful
in the way
it was built for.
The rust
was not failure.
It was just
what happens
to anything
left out long enough
to be honest
about its age.
She understood
the rust.
The sign
flickered
half-lit in daylight,
visible but unconvincing,
the way most promises
look
when you catch them
not performing
for anyone.
She did not need
the room.
She needed
the proof
that somewhere
along this road
someone had built
a place
for people
who were still deciding
where they were going.
The door
stayed unlocked
in her mind
even after she drove past it.
Some shelters
you remember
just for existing.
The light
came through the windshield
the way light
always finds
whatever is moving
toward it,
whether or not
it knows
where it is headed.
Dust hung
in the beam,
suspended,
unbothered
by gravity
for exactly as long
as the light
gave it permission.
She watched it.
Thought:
that is what I am right now.
Caught.
Visible.
Moving
without falling.
Not lost.
Just held,
briefly,
in something
brighter
than the road ahead.

AËLA… this feels like permission in the form of a poem. 🫶
There is something so deeply freeing in the thought that we don’t always need to know what we are moving toward before we are allowed to leave what no longer holds us.
Sometimes the moving really is the plan.
The road teaching that moving itself can be the plan feels like a mercy I keep returning to. I loved how the rust and the half lit sign became their own kind of shelter, proof that something once waited for people still deciding.
And that dust held in the light without falling… it stayed with me. Thank you for this.🖤✨
